2:00 P.M. - UN 235
Attendees: Brenda Dooley, Diana Summers, Joyce Stephens, Annette Charles, Nancy Gieselman, Jo Greife, Barb Hicks, Ginny McTighe, Tia Milburn, Felicia Morley, Virdia Stevens, Victoria Swope, Tina Walker, Lynn Lowder, Keondria McClish, and George Clossin.
Welcome
Brenda Dooley, Support Staff Council President, called the April meeting to order and welcomed the newly elected council members and Lynn Lowder, who represented Dr. Sluder. Each person introduced themselves and told where they work.
Minutes
The March minutes were presented for approval. A needed correction was noted in the fifth paragraph. “Call” should be changed to “called.” Brenda then called for action on the March minutes with the correction as noted. Ginny McTighe made the motion to approve and was seconded by Diana Summers. A voice vote was taken and the March minutes were approved with the correction.
Treasurer’s Report
Diana Summers, Treasurer, reported the Support Staff Council balance as $1,293.54 which includes $275.18 that is dedicated to the Outstanding Support Staff Award. The Survival Adult Abuse Center fund balance is $2,046.29. The Support Staff Council Education Award has a balance of $940.48. Brenda asked for any questions. Ginny McTighe made a motion to approve the report and Virdia Stevens seconded the motion. A voice vote was taken and the Treasurer’s Report was approved.
Administrative Liaison
Lynn Lowder, Director, Military and Veteran Services spoke to us in place of Dr. Rick Sluder.
The Office of Military and Veteran Services is working aggressively to bring as many veterans as possible to the academic process and to get them jobs. Their office area serves as a clubhouse for veterans to be able to have a safe, secure environment where they can talk with others who have been in combat situations. Mr. Lowder emphasized that no-one who has been in a battle situation ever comes back the same person they were before. The goal of the Office of Military and Veteran Services was originally to meet the education and employment needs of veterans, but the office has also been able to assist veterans with healthcare services. The Veterans Administration office out of Kansas City has representatives on campus twice a week. Mr. Lowder felt there is a good possibility of being able to establish a full-time VA office on campus to meet veteran needs without the drive to Kansas City.
The campus as a whole has been very open and encouraging for our veterans and this office.
