8/14/07

Attendance:  Debbie Combs, Belva Farnsworth, Brenda Dooley, Peggy Harrison, Cindy Merryfield, Ginny McTighe (Alt), Kathy Maham, Louise Farmer, Dean Murphy, Pam Bennett (Alt), Karen O’Keefe, Joyce Stephens (Alt), and Zach Lewis (new Professional Staff Council Liaison). Guests:  Dianne Gower, Sarah Roy, Christine Cento-Ownby, Tina Walker, Karen Strohmeyer, Donna Rogers, Shelia Schneider, Marla Jones, Barb Hicks, Penny Lund, and Kim Stark-Wroblewski.

Debbie Combs called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m.

Welcome and Introductions
Zach Lewis replaced Eugene Stillman as the Professional Staff Council Liaison.

Approval of Minutes
The minutes of the June 12, 2007 meeting were approved.

Professional Staff Council Report–Mr. Zach Lewis
Shirts will be given to professional staff, support staff, and faculty from Sept. 4-6. Sept. 6 is the date for the “Welcome Back” picnic. Zach informed the Council that the PSC has not set goals for this year in response to a question asked by a council member.

Support Staff Salary Review Committee Update–Ms. Shelia Schneider:  Shelia read the charge given to the committee.  The committee made the decision to look at years of service as opposed to merit pay.  They are also looking at the proposal to bring employees to mid-point on the pay scale for their grade, and are currently crunching numbers to see what the cost may be.  They are working with Rick Dixon on the position reviews.  Sheila noted that the AASCU report is for professional staff and faculty only and not for support staff as the charge had stated.

Summer Support Staff Social Report–Ms. Peggy Harrison:  The event was considered a success with more than 80 people attending. Custodial personnel were also invited.  Peggy recommended that the event be repeated again next year, and that ideas given for improvements be considered (including two food lines).  Four boxes of non-perishable goods were collected and donated to the Warrensburg Food Pantry.

SPRC Update–Ms. Barb Hicks:  Barb  was on an SPRC subcommittee put together by Dr. Wilson to give a brief outline for each one of the goals.  The sub-committee accomplished this in two weeks.  Feedback on the Mission/Vision should be provided to Debbie Combs.

Solid Gold Award-Ms. Barb Hicks
Barb presented certificates and pencils for June and August 2007 to: Christine Cento-Ownby, Curriculum & Instruction, nominated by Tracy Carter; Marla Jones, History & Anthropology, nominated by Kelly Greer; Penny Lund, Community Engagement, nominated by Eugene Stillman; Cindy Merryfield, Career & Technology Education, nominated by Ruthann Williams; Donna Rogers, Key Control Operations, nominated by Karen Strohmeyer; Sarah Roy, Extended Campus, nominated by Peggy Harrison and Shawn Smith; and Tina Walker, Psychology, nominated by Kim Stark-Wroblewski.  Barb reiterated that the pencils are given to the recipients to distribute as a “thank you” to other employees that have gone out of their way to accomplish a good deed.

Welcome Back Picnic–Ms. Debbie Combs
Debbie Combs announced details about the upcoming Welcome Back Picnic for all staff and faculty to be held Sept. 6 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the Union Mall.  The celebration is due to the UCM name change and the beginning of the new school year.  The Mules, Jennies, and cheerleaders will attend this event, and there will be fun and activities for all.  Food will be provided too. President Podolefsky will be providing red polo shirts with the UCM logo to all faculty and staff.  The shirts can be picked up at the Union Bookstore from Sept. 4-6 after showing UCM ID.  There will be women’s sizes available.  An email will be sent to the campus community with additional event details.

Goals for 2007-2008-Ms. Debbie Combs
All goals were approved by the council.  It was noted that the 3rd goal has now been completed (Sponsor Support Staff Summer Social), and that goal 4b. has been completed in part (Conduct a food drive for the Warrensburg Food Pantry).

Other –
-Debbie Combs and Belva Farnsworth thanked Sarah Roy for taking over the production of the Staff Span and praised her recent first edition.
-Ginny McTighe suggested we expand more on the Solid Gold program.
-Peggy Harrison suggested that the $10 gift card (for correct answers regarding the Staff Span) be funded from the Support Staff Council money in the future.  The funds were provided by Belva Farnsworth in the past. 
-Pam Bennett mentioned that the Survival House is desperate for swimming passes to the Community Center for the many children present at this time.  The Survival House is also in need of supplies.  An email will be sent to support staff about collecting supplies and cash donations for the swim passes.  The following volunteered to sponsor drop-off location :  Brenda Dooley, MAR 34; Cindy Merryfield, GRN 120; Debbie Combs, ADM 203; Zach Lewis, UN 217; Tina Walker, LOV 1111; and Terrie Baker, WDE 1000.
Pam Bennett will speak with Susan Malott, Treasurer, about donating cash for swim passes and requesting the Community Center to match the funds.
