Welcome

Support Staff Council President Peggy Harrison called the December meeting to order and welcomed those present. Sami Babrakzai was introduced as the new alternate for Academic Affairs.

November Minutes

The November minutes were approved with a correction to be made of the recorded meeting date from November 9, to November 10, 2009.

Treasurer’s Report

Treasurer Kathy Maham reported the Support Staff Council account balance to be $1,853.52. The balance includes $242.26 raised at the bake sale held on December 1 in support of the new Outstanding Support Staff Award.  The Survival Adult Abuse Center current balance is $3,270.07. The Education Award account has $545.03.

Peggy announced that she had received notification from the Survival Adult Abuse Center President, David DeFrain, that the UCM Support Staff had been unanimously chosen to receive the 2010 Clarence Bailey Award.  Each year “Survival” presents the award to one or more individuals or groups who provide notable support to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The award will be formally presented during our Support Staff Breakfast in April.

Administrative Liaison Report

Sharon Brinton, Administrative Assistant and proxy for Administrative Liaison Dr. Betty Roberts, VP Finance and Administration, gave a brief report on the ESCO project and the progress being made moving toward e-procurement. The pilot program for e-procurement is almost prepared to launch. E-procurement training sessions are being offered.

Professional Staff Council Liaison Report

Mike Jeffries, Vice Chairman of the Professional Staff Council, reported the Professional Staff Council met on Thursday, November 12.  Among the issues they discussed were parking; presidential search; the upcoming holiday events and the JP Mees Award. 

Special Presentation by Mike Jeffries

Mike Jeffries, CentralNet Director, had spoken with Peggy after our November meeting about the technologies he supports out of his office. These technologies were designed to help academics but with the rapid growth and use of computers these are really useful for the entire campus.  Mike wanted to acquaint us with what is available and possibly spur us to consider ways CentralNet might help the areas in which we work.

Adobe Presenter can change a basic PowerPoint presentation into an engaging experience by adding audio, animation, interactivity etc. and makes the presentation playable on a variety of media.

Adobe Acrobat Connect Professional allows several people (UCM is licensed for up to 200) to do web conferencing.  Conferences can be done audio only with no video, video with IM (instant messaging), or using both audio and video.

Helix Streaming is available and supports Real Media, Windows Media and Quicktime formats.

ITunes U @ UCM is available through the Apples iTunes Store.  This is a searchable way to deliver audio (podcasts), video (vodcasts) and PDF formats.

Although currently in a trial status, UCM should be able to support not only our own podcasts and vodcasts but also wikis and blogs in the near future. The true value of this will be the safety afforded using UCM's OSX server.

The last resource Mike mentioned that is available for our use is Atomic Learning.  This is a huge on-line library of short, to the point, training videos for a large variety of software programs. Rather than reading a program’s help index, try searching Atomic Learning for a video walk through.

All the technologies presented are available through our server base so each office does not have to buy the software.  Mike Jeffries can be contacted to suggest solutions to meet needs and to set up training sessions.

Committee Reports

Cindy Moore, Holiday Event Committee Chairman, reported the Holiday Event has been promoted in the winter edition of Staff Span and with a special email flyer. Everything is in place for food collections to benefit the Food Pantry. Items can be dropped off at various points on campus and at the Holiday Event.  Cash donations for the Food Pantry can also be brought to the joint Professional Staff and Support Staff Holiday Event on Wednesday, December 16, Elliott Union Ballroom from 2:00-4:00 pm.

Peggy Harrison reported that the Support Staff had a wonderful turnout for the bake sale and raised $242.26 to use toward our new Outstanding Support Staff Award. Nomination requests will go out in January.  The intentions are to have the UCM TECA Laser Engraving Services create a plaque. A cash award is also still being considered. The committee would appreciate any suggestions or feedback concerning the nomination forms and award presentation. Please contact Peggy Harrison.

The Penny War held during the December 4 Community Coffee raised $172.62 for the Food Pantry.

Flyers were handed out about the Missouri College Personnel Association (MoCPA) Drive-In Conference keynote speaker, Cathy Newton.

Sharon Briton won a free lunch card donated by Mazzio’s, Peggy Harrison won a free lunch buffet certificate donated by Monetti’s and Sami Babrakzai won a set of picture frames donated by Cindy Merryfield.

Old Business

Diana Summers did not have a report on an Office Supply Swap but will work toward coming up with a spring date.

New Business

Peggy reported on the Executive Council’s meeting with the presidential search consultant, Mr. Kenneth Hutchinson.

Peggy Harrison and Holly Davenport (PSC) were invited, and gave reports on their respective meetings with the consultant at the General Faculty Meeting.

Special thanks were given to Paula Beck, Pam Bennett, Sarah Craig, Karen Hibdon, Kristen Plummer and Lisa Schmidt for their excellent work on the Staff Span newsletter and to Savitri Wilder for great event promotions.
