Support Staff Council Minutes
November 8, 2011

Attendees: Brenda Dooley, Cindy Merryfield, Diana Summers, Joyce Stephens, Suzan Brown,
Keri Busker, Ginny McTighe, Tia Milburn, Bettie Moore, Shelia Schneider, Jo Greife, Victoria
Swope, Teresa Alewel, Beth Rutt, Susie Pine, Tammy Shanks, Helen Mills, Ardith Sampson,
Judy Kenney and Becky White.
Brenda Dooley, Support Staff Council President, called the November meeting to order. We each
introduced ourselves and told where we work.
Brenda asked if there were any corrections or additions to the October minutes. A misspelling
was noted for correction. Cindy Merryfield made a motion to approve the minutes. Tia Milburn
seconded the motion. Brenda called for a voice vote and the October minutes were approved
with the correction as noted.
Diana Summers, Treasurer, stated the Support Staff Council balance is still $989.16 with no
activity reported. The Support Staff Council Education Award has a balance of $745.48. The
Survival Adult Abuse Center fund balance is $2,230.04. The bills for supplies bought for the
Survival Adult Abuse Center Biscuits and Gravy Fundraiser held during Homecoming have
not been received. Brenda will follow up on these. Brenda asked for a motion to accept the
treasurer's report as presented. Cindy Merryfield made a motion to accept the report. Shelia
Schneider seconded the motion. A vote was taken accepting the report.
Teresa Alewel, Career Services, was in attendance on behalf of Dr. Rick Sluder. No report was

Beth Rutt passed out flyers and encouraged all to participate in the PSC Turkey Trot Bowling
coming up on Monday, November 14. The event is open to all faculty, staff, and students. Non-
perishable food items will be collected to benefit the Warrensburg Food Pantry.
The Professional Staff Council had their "60 Minutes with the President." President Ambrose
had been given questions in advance and spoke to them and the budget. Strategic planning
and restructuring will be ongoing processes. One item shared by the President is a 2 year
commitment with Habitat for Humanity and the Warrensburg School District for an Educational
Build with the theme "Building Community through Education." The blitz build will start during
the fall Week of Welcome with the house to be ready by Homecoming.
Beth also distributed colorful reminders from Impact Student Leadership UCM to be given
students to attend a Mix & Mingle. The event, presented by Teresa Alewell from Career
Services, is designed to help students learn socializing and networking skills.
The Professional Staff Council will meet on Thursday, November 10. Discussions continue on
reorganization, goals, objectives and purpose.
Brenda sent out information on the Tobacco Policy Committee's charge and progress to date.
Linda Regelski, licensed practical nurse, University Health Center is our representative on the
committee and can be contacted with questions.
Shelia Schneider reported on the findings of the adhoc committee reviewing emeriti and staff
retirement benefits. The committee found UCM benefits for all retirees comparable or better
than our peer institutions. In addition however, emeriti have an organization that has monthly
luncheon meetings and two special luncheons to welcome new members.
Becky White, Election Committee Chairman, reported on the suggested changes to the Support
Staff Organizational Guidelines. Brenda Dooley had emailed council members both the original
guidelines with markups and a final draft. The council discussed a possible rewrite of Section
III, C, 2, for clarification. It was also suggested to add information on Section VI, C, to lead the
reader back to Section IV, B, 2, e.
Brenda suggested that action on the guidelines be tabled. Council members were encouraged to
read through the draft copy of the Staff Organizational Guidelines and contact Becky White with
corrections, comments and questions.
The Support Staff Council and Professional Staff Council are co-sponsoring the Community
Coffee on Friday, December 2. The council discussed collections of non-perishable food items
for the Warrensburg Food Pantry; gift cards to be given to the Survival Adult Abuse Center; and
the collection of gently used coats for internationals on campus. Brenda said she would make
sure to have cans available for cash donations.
Susie Pine announced an upcoming fundraiser to benefit the Outstanding Support Staff Award.
Two professional massage therapists have volunteered their time to give 5 minute massages on
Tuesday, December 6 from 10 AM – 2 PM in the Union Atrium. The cost will be $3.00 per 5
Friday, November 11, 2 PM will be the dedication of UCM's new Veteran's Center
Brenda adjourned the meeting at 2:22 pm.
