Global Vision Service Learning Program in Poland

Posted: 3/21/2013 - Central Reaches Out to Help Others in Poland

Thanks to the wonderful generosity of an anonymous alum, the University of Central Missouri has developed the Global Vision Endowment. The funds will allow the development of an outreach program in summer 2013 sending a team of four students and a faculty member to Poland to spend two weeks volunteering on community projects such as supporting youth and adults with special needs, teaching English to children from pre-school through high school and supporting at-risk individuals needing special emotional support. The students will have a unique opportunity to learn about working “with host partners on family-friendly service efforts with resourceful grass-roots agencies” in a friendly and historically rich region.

The educational service learning project will be led by Ms. Amy Jammeh, a faculty member in the English Language Center at UCM. Amy has successfully led three Global Vision service projects to Ecuador and Costa Rica and she is an alum of a Rotary International Ambassador Scholarship for study in Chile. She is well suited to lead the group as the university continues to explore new directions in international education. Amy is excited about participating in a different country and culture with UCM undergraduates and she feels that volunteering has always been something that she enjoys personally outside of school or work. We are delighted that she gets to share this experience with UCM students.

Four undergraduate students will be chosen to represent the four colleges at UCM:

1) College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

2) Harmon College of Business and Professional Services

3) College of Education

4) College of Health, Science and Technology

Students may apply for the Global Vision Service Learning Program by filling out the application by April 5, 2013. Students must be returning to UCM for both Fall 2013 and Spring 2014. A report of the success and impact of the program will be shared after the Global Vision volunteer service project team members return to campus in the fall.
