PURPOSE OF COURSE:
To give the student a basic understanding of the history of jazz and of musical elements within jazz.
History and Development of Jazz helps students to achieve the following degree outcomes: BM degree - "Understand the basic elements and structures of music history, theory, and performance literature." and "Understand music's relationship to the other arts, and how the arts relate to mankind."
The student will:
- Develop the ability to recognize individual instrument colors as they are used in jazz.
- Recognize 12-bar blues form and AABA song form.
- Learn the chronology of the eras of jazz and important performers,
groups, and stylistic characteristics of each era.
- Develop the ability to distinguish one era of jazz from another aurally.

- The 1980s and beyond (neo bop, acid jazz, Latin jazz and more)
Class time will include lecture, listening to jazz recordings, watching jazz videos, and guest presentations. A critical review of five (5) jazz albums (pre-approved by the instructor) will be due toward the end of the term. Quizzes may and will be given at any time. A mid-term exam and final exam will be given at the traditional calendar periods.
GRADING AND EVALUATION:
Tests will be based on material from the text as well as lectures and demonstrations. A mid-term and final exam will be given. Each test will include matching, multiple choice, true-false, fill-in, essay, and listening questions. Listening questions will make up 33% to 50% of each test. The listening may be either from examples played in class, examples from the listening list, or unknown listening of which the student may be asked to identify the particular instrument, musical form, or style.
Quizzes may be given at any time and will frequently follow video days and presentations. The lowest quiz score will be thrown out and make-ups will not be given (except in special cases).
Each student will be required to write a critical review of five (5) jazz albums (pre-approved by the instructor). These reviews should be typed, list all appropriate dates and personnel, describe each individual selection, and should, in the student’s own words give reasons why he/she liked/disliked the album.
Attendance will be taken into account in grading. After the 3rd absence, 21/2 points will be deducted from a maximum of 95 points in attendance.
Final grades will be based solely on percentage of points possible.
A = 90-100%, B = 80-89%, C = 70-79%, D = 60-69%, F= 59% and below
