Honored for his exemplary service, Dr. Alvin R. Tinsley received the Mathematical Association of America’s Meritorious Service Award in January 2002. It was one of his proudest accomplishments in a career at Central that began in 1969.
Dr. Tinsley, professor emeritus of mathematics, came to the university as an instructor after teaching junior high school mathematics in Bolivar and Raytown. He completed his bachelor’s degree in education with a major in mathematics at Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, his master’s degree in mathematics at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, and his doctorate in mathematics at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley.
At Central, he climbed the faculty ranks and became a full professor in 1997 while teaching classes dealing with analysis, geometry and topology. He served for one year as interim director of the Actuarial Science Program.
Dr. Tinsley found opportunities to serve the university beyond the classroom. He spent two terms on the Faculty Senate, and was involved in many committees at the department, college and university levels.
He shared his passion for mathematics through his involvement in the Missouri Section of MAA. In the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Central, he co-founded the student chapter in 1994 and co-sponsored the chapter until his retirement in 2002. He spent for three years as the department liaison to MAA. At the national level, he served as Missouri Section governor, 1007-2000.
