What’s with the Green Dot?

Picture a map of your community. Now place a red dot on that map, that red dot represents a moment in time. A red dot represents a moment in time in which somebody uses their words, actions, or behavior to perpetuate violence in your community. A red dot can be the moment when somebody uses their words to harm or harass someone. A red dot can be the moment when somebody raises their fist to another in violence, or when somebody initiates sexual contact without consent. Over time red dots accumulate on our map, much like you would see a map filled with cases of an illness, and we can see a community being impacted by violence.

However, hope and help comes in the form of a green dot!

Imagine that same map of your community again; instead of imagining a red dot on your map, picture a green dot. A green dot also represents a moment in time, a moment in time when somebody uses their words, actions, or behavior to combat or negate violence in our community. A green dot can be the moment it takes to check in on a person and ask ‘Are you okay?’. A green dot can be the moment it takes for somebody to spill a drink in a high risk situation to create a disturbance and diffuse a situation. Imagine that for every action that somebody combats or negates violence in our community a green dot is placed on that map. Instead of having a map filled with red dots, we have a map overwhelmingly glowing green with moments of time where people have said ‘violence is not tolerated in my community, and I am doing my part to prevent violence’; this map is the vision of Green Dot.

Red and green dots

The power of Green Dot is this simple vision and common goal; this map of our community and a clear role of how we can prevent violence within it.
