WARRENSBURG, MO (Aug. 10, 2015) – Recent upgrades to the Bowling Center in the University of Central Missouri’s Ed Elliott Student Union will offer bowlers state-of-the art equipment behind the scenes with the latest digital lighting and imagery available up front, creating a unique recreational experience.

Celebrating the opening of the renovated Bowling Center in the Ed Elliott Student Union at the University of Central Missouri are, left to right, Ed Wirthwein, assistant director of the Ed Elliott Student Union; Frank Hall, bowling operations coordinator; and Jim Howard, bowling center manager.

According to Jim Howard, Bowling Center manager, the $370,000 renovation includes the installation of state-of-the-art digital pinsetting equipment, replacing original equipment installed in the 1960s. Upgrades to the lanes in the public areas of the center include the installation of LED pin lighting that offers a variety of lighting options and new graphics for the enlarged wall above the pinsetters. New LED division lighting also is featured along new gutters caps between the lanes, and two new projection screens also may dropped along the canopy wall for use with computer-compatible video projection for entertainment or instruction. The renovation also includes an expanded pro shop.

“This new pin-setting equipment is much more energy efficient and reliable than the equipment we were using, and it offers greater safety features for those working to maintain the equipment during operation,” said Frank Hall, bowling operations coordinator. He added that the renovation also included modifications to the structure and layout of the facility to accommodate the new equipment.

Funding for the renovation was provided from Elliott Student Union auxiliary reserve funds. The recent renovation is the most recent upgrade of the bowling center. Scoring tables and seating areas were part of partial renovation seven years ago that included digital scoring equipment.

In addition to recreational use by UCM students, the Bowling Center also is open to the public for recreational use and league participation. The lanes are used approximately 6-8 hours per week for academic instruction and the UCM Jennies bowling team also uses the lanes for practice a minimum of 10-15 hours per week. The center also hosts events for Special Olympics and the Warrensburg Parks and Recreation Department, along with other community support events.

The renovated facility opened to UCM students and staff and the public on Aug. 3 after being closed for two months for construction and installation of equipment. The grand opening celebration is planned for Sept. 24 in conjunction with the 54th birthday celebration for the Elliott Student Union.

The Bowling Center was created with the construction of the first phase of the Elliott Student Union in 1962. The original bowling center contained 10 lanes, which were expanded to 20 with a 1966 addition to the building. Ten of those lanes were reclaimed in the 1990s for office space.
