WARRENSBURG, MO (May 3, 2010) – Recognizing the outstanding students in the senior class, UCM has named Kaitlyn Roach, a criminal justice major from Warrensburg, and Nicholas McDaniels, a criminal justice and political science major from St. Peters, as the 2010 recipients of the prestigious Charno Award, presented annually to the top male and female members of the senior class at UCM.
Roach is the daughter of Shawn and Sandy Roach, Warrensburg. McDaniels is the son of Bob and Cindy McDaniels, St. Peters.
Roach and McDaniels were recognized during an April 15 reception honoring inductees into Who’s Who at the University of Central Missouri. Finalists for the Charno Award were selected from those inducted into Who’s Who at the University of Central Missouri. The Charno Award recipients also will be recognized during spring commencement Saturday, May 8, in the university’s Multipurpose Building.
During her career at UCM, Roach served as president and vice president of the UCM Student Government Association. She was secretary of the UCM Young Republicans, a McNair Scholar, and a member of The Honors College and Alpha Omicron Pi.
McDaniels was president of the UCM College Democrats, and served as president and vice president of the UCM Political Science Students Association. He also was speaker of the house of UCM Student Government Association, a member of The Honors College and a leader in the UCM American Democracy Project.
The honor is named for George Charno, Sr., a Kansas City attorney who established the award in 1940 to recognize the outstanding male member of the graduating class. The companion award for the outstanding female class member was established in 1941.
