UCM's G.E. Davila Chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association – Lambda Alpha Epsilon captured the Sweepstakes Trophy for the seventh consecutive year at the recent ACJA-LAE Regional III competition in Kirksville, Mo.

Heading for National Competition

The UCM team will travel to Jacksonville, Fla., next spring to the ACJA-LAE National Competition, where they will compete to claim their seventh national sweepstakes award.

Competing with Their Peers

The Sweepstakes Trophy is awarded to the school with the most individual and team trophies combined. The 29 members of the UCM team joined teams representing 12 chapters from Region III schools. Team members participated in individual and team events in the lower and upper divisions of student competition and the professional division.

A Balanced Win

“This is our most balanced win yet,” said Roger Pennel, team advisor and professor of criminal justice. “We had 27 our of the 29 members of our team receive at least one award, and we received a number of awards in the areas of crime scene investigation and physical agility, where we have struggled in the past. We also did well in all three divisions.”

Senior Brody Sanson, competing in upper division, again received the Top Gun Award in the individual firearms competition. Tom Noble, competing in the lower division, earned the Top Academic Award, leading the team to the highest number of academic points scored in the history of UCM participation in the competition.

"Our excellent showing in a variety of areas of competition is testament to the breadth of our team's expertise and ability," Pennel said. "Jennifer Ianno received awards in three different overall categories, and Wesley Prettyman received awards in four different categories."
