Ewing Named Missouri’s 2014 Outstanding Postsecondary Math Educator

WARRENSBURG, MO (Dec. 11, 2014) – David E. Ewing, Warrensburg, associate professor of mathematics education at the University of Central Missouri, recently was named the recipient of the 2014 Outstanding Postsecondary Mathematics Educator Award by the Missouri Council of the Teachers of Mathematics at the group’s annual conference Dec. 5-6 in Columbia.

The award is presented annually to a college or university mathematics educator who demonstrates effective mathematics teaching practices and excellence in working with university students while providing service to the profession. The award recipient is selected by a committee of mathematics instructors from across the state from peer nominations.

Ewing received Bachelor of Science degrees in mathematics and psychology and Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics, all from Kansas State University. He began his career teaching junior and high school mathematics and science at Junction City, Olathe and Wamego, Kan. He then moved into higher education, teaching intermediate algebra at Kansas State University and mathematics and science education at the University of Central Iowa prior to joining the UCM mathematics faculty in 1991.

At UCM Ewing teaches courses in K-12 mathematics education and mathematics, preparing future mathematics educators. In addition to his membership in and service as vice president of the MCTM, he also is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Iowa Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Mathematics Association of America. He is a recipient of the Outstanding Instructor Award from Kansas State University.
