WARRENSBURG, MO (Oct. 18, 2010 ) – Young musicians representing 29 high schools from Missouri and Kansas will participate in the 2010 Festival of Champions as the University of Central Missouri hosts the annual marching band competition at Audrey J. Walton Stadium Saturday, Oct. 30.
Preliminary marching band competition begins at 10 a.m. on Vernon Kennedy Field at Walton Stadium. After lunch, scheduled from 11:50 a.m. to 1 p.m., preliminary competition resumes, followed by a UCM Marching Mules performance at 5:30 p.m. Preliminary awards will be announced at 5:50 p.m. Finals competition begins at 7p.m., with final awards scheduled for approximately 10 p.m.
Indoor drum line competition begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Building, followed by indoor guard competition, which begins at 4 p.m., also in the Multipurpose Building.
Missouri schools registered to compete include Ava, Blue Springs, Branson, Butler, California, Clinton, Concordia, Harrisonville, Hillcrest (Springfield), Lee’s Summit, Lee’s Summit North, Lee’s Summit West, Leeton, Monett, Platte County R-3, Pleasant Hill, Raytown, Raytown South, Smithton, Warrensburg, Willow Springs, and Winfield.
Kansas schools competing include Basehor-Linwood, Blue Valley Southwest, Buhler, Shawnee Mission North, Shawnee Mission South, Shawnee Mission West and Topeka West.
Nationally recognized adjudicators from as far away as Texas State University and Michigan State University will attend to evaluate the performances.
The public is invited to attend all events. Admission is $10 for the field competition and $5 for indoor-only events. Children under the age of 6 are admitted free. All proceeds will benefit the UCM Department of Music Scholarship Fund and the Ararat Shrine Temple Hospital Transportation Fund.
The 2010 Festival of Champions is hosted by the UCM Department of Music, the Department of Music Wind and Percussion areas, and the UCM Bands. Primary sponsors for the event are Meyer Music, Midwest Marching.com, the Ararat Shrine/Houn’ Dawg Club, Sabian, Vic Firth and the Warrensburg Visitors Center.
