WARRENSBURG, MO (Oct. 28, 2011) – Young musicians representing 28 high schools from Missouri and Kansas will participate in the 2011 Festival of Champions as the University of Central Missouri hosts the annual marching band competition at Audrey J. Walton Stadium Saturday, Oct. 29.
Preliminary marching band competition begins at 10 a.m. on Vernon Kennedy Field at Walton Stadium. After lunch, scheduled from 11:50 a.m. to 1 p.m., preliminary competition resumes, followed by a UCM Marching Mules performance at 5 p.m. Preliminary awards will be announced at 5:30 p.m. Finals competition begins at 7p.m., with final awards scheduled for approximately 10 p.m.
Indoor drum line competition begins at 8:45 a.m. p.m. in the Student Recreation Center, followed by indoor guard competition, which begins at 1 p.m., also in Student Recreation Center.
Missouri schools registered to compete include Blue Springs, Brookfield, Butler, Clinton, Fort Osage, Springfield Hillcrest, Hillsboro, Houston, Lee’s Summit, Lee’s Summit North, Leeton, Springfield Parkview, Pleasant Hill, Raymore Peculiar, Raytown, Smithton, Southern Boone County, Tipton, Warrensburg and Winfield.
Kansas schools competing include Basehor-Linwood, Blue Valley Southwest, Buhler, Shawnee Mission North, Shawnee Mission South, Shawnee Mission West, Topeka West and Washburn Rural.
Nationally recognized adjudicators from Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois and Tennessee will serve as judges for the events.
The public is invited to attend all events. Admission is $12 for general admission and $5 for drumline and auxiliary events. Children under the age of six are admitted free. All proceeds will benefit the UCM Department of Music Scholarships Fund and the Ararat Shrine Temple Hospital Transportation Fund.
The 2011 Festival of Champions is hosted by the UCM Department of Music, the Department of Music Wind and Percussion areas, and the UCM Bands. Primary sponsors for the event are Meyer Music, Midwest Marching.com, the Ararat Shrine/Houn’ Dawg Club, Sabian and Vic Firth.
