UCM Foundation Announces Opportunity Grants

WARRENSBURG, MO (May 21, 2013) – Projects that range from helping student veterans to teaching bully prevention will receive funding from the UCM Foundation Opportunity Grants, Jason Drummond, Foundation executive director, announced during a reception in the Elliott Union Kitterman Room.

“We’re excited that the Foundation Board of Directors chose to provide funding for every project submitted in our first year of offering these grants to our faculty and staff,” Drummond said. “We had a tremendous response from our academic community and the review committee was impressed by the variety of projects. We believe these will have a significant impact on learning opportunities for our students.”

Grants ranged from $300 to $4,500. Recipients and projects are:

  • Darrell Brammer, director of the Small Business and Technology Development Center, for Brightfest
  • Karen Foster, associate professor in literacy, for service teaching in Jamaica
  • Theresa Gordon and Marlys Peck, associate professors in social work, for the food pantry
  • Annette Griffith, adjunct instructor of special education, for applied behavior analysis and
    autism training
  • Ashley Guyer, research analyst for Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment, and member/secretary of the President’s Commission on the Status of Women, for Empowering Women’s Leadership Potential
  • Tricia Hansen-Horn, professor of communication, for Something to Eat
  • Pam Hoyer, assistant professor in the School of Technology, and Yue Cai-Hillon, associate professor of management, for Central Mules Cooperative and Central Water Company
  • Dick Kahoe, associate professor in career and technology education, for wireless camera tethering
  • Amy Kiger, director of the Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention Program, for STEBS UP
  • Julie Ray Mollenkamp, professor of theatre and dance, for Kindertransport
  • Anna Oller, professor of biology and earth science, for research about sanitizer effectiveness and microbial growth in wineries
  • Steve Price, assistant professor of communication and sociology, for sound design studio
  • Karin Sartwell, assistant professor of nursing, for challenge coins for student veterans
  • Michael Sekelsky, professor of music, for percussion sight-reading performance development and assessment
  • Jay Steinkruger, assistant professor of chemistry, for chemicals and chromatography
  • Susan Stockton, instructor in nutrition, for Core Training Institute Project Lead the Way
