WARRENSBURG, MO (July 14, 2011) – Enjoy a summer evening, ice cream and music as University of Central Missouri President Chuck Ambrose and Mrs. Kris Ambrose host the annual President's Lawn Concert Monday, July 25, on the lawn of Selmo Park, the university president’s residence, 518 S. Holden St.
UCM administrators will begin serving ice cream and cookies at 7 p.m., and the Warrensburg Community Band, under the direction of Russell Coleman, UCM professor emeritus of music, will perform at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and seating is provided. In case of inclement weather, the concert will take place in the Elliott Union.
The program will open with the national anthem, followed by “A Copland Tribute” and “Wedding Dance.” Mike Sekelsky, professor of music, is the guest soloist for the band’s performance of “Concerto for Drum Set,” followed by “Festival Prelude” under the director of guest conductor Steven Moore, chair of the Department of Music.
Soloist Sami Babrakzai will join the band on the steel drum for “Danzas Cubanas,” followed by “Neopolitan Songs,” featuring guest vocalist Jacob Sentgeorge, assistant professor of music.
The band will perform selections from “”Porgy and Bess” by Ira Gershwin, closing with a rousing rendition of John Philip Sousa’s “Star and Stripes Forever,” a Warrensburg Community Band tradition.
The Warrensburg Community Band was founded in 1985 to provide musicians an opportunity to perform for pleasure while rendering a service to the community. Membership is open to individuals above high-school age, and represents a wide variety of occupations. Financial support is provided by advertisers and private donors.
