WARRENSBURG, MO (April 8, 2014) – Joy Stevenson, director of the International Center at the University of Central Missouri, received the highest honor conferred upon the university’s professional staff when she received the John Paul Mees Award for Outstanding Professional Staff during the annual Professional Staff Breakfast April 3.

John Culp, program development and retention coordinator for University of Central Missouri athletics and 2012 recipient of the award, made the presentation to Stevenson, who was nominated by her peers. The award is named for the late John Paul Mees, who died in 2000 while serving as vice president of planning and policy/executive assistant to the president at UCM. Mees, who was known as a dedicated and motivated employee, joined the university in 1988 as executive assistant to the president and professor of education. He also served as provost and vice president for academic affairs.
Stevenson received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas and master’s and doctoral degrees, all in anthropology, from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She joined the UCM professional staff in 1983 as an international student advisor while also teaching in the areas of archaeology, higher education administration and academic enrichment. She served as interim director in the areas of specialized services and international admissions and was named director of international student scholar services 2000. She was named interim director of international programs in 2005 and became director in 2007.
In addition to her administrative duties, Stevenson has traveled extensively throughout the world recruiting international students for UCM. She has served in a variety of leadership positions at the regional and national level for NAFSA: Association of International Educators and Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars. She has served as treasurer for the Center for Transatlantic Studies, Alcala, Spain; financial director for the Middelburg Center for Transatlantic Studies; and director and member of the executive board of the Maastricht Consortium for Transatlantic Studies.
At the state level, Stevenson has served as an officer for the Kansas City International Relations Council, Study Missouri Consortium and Missouri International Consortium for International Programs and Studies. She also has served on a number of state boards related to historic preservation and archaeology.
At UCM, Stevenson provided leadership for a variety of committees and council, including the Provost’s Council, the Faculty Senate International Affairs Committee, the Professional Staff Council Human Resources Committee and the President’s Commission on the Status of Women. She is past president of the Warrensburg Rotary Club and has served as the club’s study abroad coordinator. She has been active with the Warrensburg Community Chorus, the Warrensburg Christmas Store, the Johnson County Historical Society and the Warrensburg Historic Preservation Action Committee and has served in leadership roles with Christ Episcopal Church of Warrensburg.
