NAPHE is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to enhance the profession of its members through programs, networking and information resources that address the broad range of roles fulfilled by presidential assistants in service to presidential leadership and higher education. The organization was initiated in 1987 when five presidential assistants gathered at a coffee shop at O’Hara Airport in Chicago to discuss the possibility of organizing a meeting for presidential assistants that attended the annual American Council on Education meeting. Today, NAPHE’s membership includes 600 presidential assistants in higher education from across the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Mexico.

Huffman has served UCM since 1999. Prior to her election as board chair, she served a three-year term on the NAPAHE board, and recently began serving her second term. Her service includes chairing NAPAHE’s 2014 Conference Planning Committee.

Through her involvement in NAPAHE, Huffman has been able to showcase UCM and campus members who can speak on a number of higher education topics. This includes UCM President Charles Ambrose, who participated in a panel discussion related to Strategic Governance for Student Success during the 2014 conference. In 2015, Jeff Huffman, director of the Military and Veteran Services, led a concurrent session and spoke about the Military and Veterans Success Center, and Courtney Tripp, manager of new media and communication in University Relations, led a concurrent session and spoke about social media at UCM.
