WARRENSBURG, MO (Oct. 22, 2010) – The University of Central Missouri Gallery of Art and Design will host a panel discussion, "Personally Speaking – Local Women Combat Veterans Share Their Stories" at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, in the Gallery of Art and Design, 217 E. Clark St., Warrensburg.
The event is planned in conjunction with the exhibition “When Janey Comes Marching Home: Portraits of Women Veterans” currently on display in the gallery.
Area women sharing their stories are Maj. Janet Herrick, Maj. Rain Jones, Maj. Kelly Dobert, Maj. Esther Pinchasin and Maj. Colette Moses, all U.S. Army from Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Also participating will be Chief Master Sgt. Vicki Orcutt, Lt. Col Kristen Goodwin and Maj. Sarah Saelens, all U.S. Air Force from Whiteman Air Force Base.
The panel discussion will allow each woman to share their personal experiences about military life, the challenges they face, and their love of country, as well as challenge the stereotypes and misconceptions of women in the military.
The exhibition, “When Janey Comes Marching Home: Portraits of Women Veterans,” is a multi-media initiative consisting of a gallery show, book and documentary film that present a complex portrait of service women returning from war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan. A collaboration between author-filmmaker Laura Browder and photojournalist Sascha Pflaeging, “When Janey Comes Marching Home” presents a series of approximately 45 large-scale color photographic portraits and oral histories of women combat veterans.
The UCM Gallery of Art and Design is open to the public, free of charge, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Groups are welcome.
