MLK Issues Forum Features Actor, Educator Baron Kelly

WARRENSBURG, MO (Jan. 8, 2010) – The public is invited to join in the examination of the topic of "Civil Rights as a Social Contract: A Campus Dialogue for Action" as UCM hosts the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Issues Forum, a part of the university’s 2010 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

The event is planned for Thursday, Jan. 14, in Elliott Union 235.  Keynote speaker for the event is professional actor and educator Baron Kelly. Kelly will offer public performances of dramatic readings on the subject of diversity and social justice at 9:30 and 11 a.m.

In addition to his extensive work in theatre, television and film, Kelly is an assistant professor of theatre. He received a diploma from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, a master’s degree in acting from California State University Long Beach, and a doctoral degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During 2007-2008, he was a Fulbright Scholar at the International Migration and Ethnic Relations Center at the University of Bergen, Norway.

Breakout sessions are planned for 10 and 11:30 a.m. Topics of group discussions include “Affirmative Action and the Wage Gap,” “The Military and Civil Rights,” “Religion and Government,” “Women and Politics,” “Education Policy and ‘No Child Left Behind,’” and “Social Justice and Inequality.”
