New Admissions Director Named

WARRENSBURG, MO (Nov. 19, 2007) – A change in leadership in the Office of Admissions recently was announced by Matt Melvin, assistant provost for enrollment management at the University of Central Missouri.

Melvin said that Paul Orscheln, who has served as director of admissions since 2003, is leaving his post Dec. 14 to accept a new position as director of admission at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. Ann Nordyke, currently assistant director of student financial assistance, has been appointed to fill Orscheln’s post.

Ann Nordyke“Ann is a seasoned and service-oriented administrator who has been instrumental in the recent conversion to the Banner student information system,” Melvin said. “Her background in financial aid gives her a unique perspective and will provide greater alignment and integration between the two offices as we seek to provide more seamless and transparent admissions and financial aid counseling for students and their families.

Melvin added that because the initial college choice process is increasingly being driven by issues of cost and affordability, “Ann gives us a world view that will be unique and incredibly important as we continue to develop new and innovative ways to attract, retain and graduate our students.”

Nordyke began working at UCM in 1989 as a financial aid counselor, and became assistant director in 1996. She earned a bachelor’s degree with a double major in psychology and sociology at Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, and a master’s degree in student personnel administration from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, OH.

“I am excited to begin my duties as director of admissions,” Nordyke said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to pursue UCM's enrollment goals.  Paul Orscheln and his staff have done a great job, and I hope to build on this foundation.”

Orscheln is a longtime university staff member, who received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UCM, and is currently a candidate in the university’s cooperative Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis degree program through the University of Missouri-Columbia. He began admissions-related work at UCM in 1999.

Melvin commended Orscheln’s service and accomplishments while serving the university, saying that he is a “testament to the powerful shaping influence this university can have on a student’s life.

“Paul has served this university well, first as a student-athlete and subsequently in several areas of enrollment services, culminating in his appointment as director of admissions,” Melvin said. "During his tenure, the quality, quantity and diversity of the freshman class have increased. Paul has been instrumental in creating a data-driven, innovative and service-oriented admissions team.”

Benefiting from Orscheln’s leadership, the university this fall experienced a 2 percent growth in student enrollment, and its incoming freshman class had the highest average ACT scores in university history.

Orscheln called his experience in the Office of Admissions “invaluable and transformational,” noting that the university has been able to reach new heights in recruitment and retention.

“I am very proud of what we’ve accomplished during my tenure, and I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to serve the Office of Admissions, the Enrollment Management division and the university in this capacity.  I have no doubt UCM will continue to move in a positive direction,” he said, “I would also like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Matt Melvin for his unwavering support in my pursuit of personal and professional goals."
