Public Safety Offers Suggestions to Assist Students with Parking

Contact: Jeff Murphy
WARRENSBURG, MO (Sept. 12, 2014) – An active, engaged campus with a growing enrollment, along with the largest construction project in the history of the University of Central Missouri have had an impact on parking availability at UCM, making parking a key issue for many UCM students this fall.

“UCM is fortunate to have a record enrollment this semester, and we are engaged in the largest construction project in the university’s history with The Crossing – South at Holden. These are signs of tremendous progress at the university, but it also puts pressure on students and campus visitors who are looking for parking spaces, particularly at peak traffic times,” said Scott Rhoad, interim director of public safety. “The university created several additional parking areas and upgraded others prior to the start of the fall semester. Additionally, the university is working on long-term plans to help improve parking, but we also want to offer some immediate suggestions to help students.”

According to the Department of Public Safety, parking is in the highest demand around 10 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Individuals who have classes at these peak periods are encouraged to plan ahead when traveling to campus, and give themselves plenty of extra time to find a space. If the parking lot you are accustomed to using is full, lots close to campus are full, consider parking at the Multipurpose Building lot. Parking spaces are almost always available in this area, particularly during weekdays.  Most of these spaces are within a six- to eight-minute walk to the center of campus.

Preparing for the long term, UCM has identified locations to increase parking on the west side of campus. Approximately 200 spaces will be available by fall semester 2015 coinciding with the opening of The Crossing – South at Holden. UCM will continue to monitor parking and look for opportunities to open more spaces, when funding is available.
