Following his retirement from full-time employment, Piatt continues to serve the university on a part-time basis as student success coordinator for the College of Applied Sciences and Technology.

Piatt earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physics in 1973 and a master's degree in college student personnel administration in 1993, both from UCM. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he was a mathematics teacher at Sedalia Middle School prior to joining Sedalia Computer Services as a programmer and analyst. While at UCM, Piatt has served as a member and president of the Professional Staff Council and a member of the University Union Design and Development Task Force and Advisory Board. He also served on the James C. Kirkpatrick Library Steering Committee, the Provost Search Committee, and committees concerned with employee health care, Distinguished Scholar selection and the Student Retention Task Force.

In Warrensburg, Piatt is a 1990 graduate of Johnson County CLIMB, and served as the 1990-91 chairman of the Johnson County United Way annual campaign. In Sedalia, Piatt is active as a member and past president of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Parish Council. He served on the community advisory board for State Fair Community College’s data processing program, and he participated for five years with the State Fair Statesmen, singing baritone.
