WARRENSBURG, MO (March 9, 2011) – University of Central Missouri President Charles and Mrs. Kris Ambrose will join the UCM Department of Music in showcasing the talents of UCM’s music students and faculty at the President’s Gala Concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, in Hendricks Hall.
The musical celebration will features the finest of UCM music ensembles, with more than 170 students performing as part of the Wind Ensemble, the Concert Choir, the Jazz Ensemble I and the UCM Symphony Orchestra. The public is invited to attend at no charge.
The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Scott Lubaroff, will present “A Short Overture for Band” by Joseph Wilcox Jenkins, “Symphony No. 6” by Vincent Persichetti; and “American Salute” by Morton Gould. The Concert Choir, under the direction of Alan Zabriskie, will present “Two Japanese Proverbs” by Gary Kent Walth, “Somewhere” by Bernstein, and “It Takes a Village” by Joan Szymko.
Under the direction of David Aaberg, the Jazz Ensemble I will present “Moten Swing” by Buster and Benny Moten, with soloists Justin Robinson on alto saxophone and Greg Blakeman on trumpet; and “Better Days Ahead” by Pat Matheny, with soloists Michael Martin on piano and Jacob Crouse on bass. The UCM Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of John Rutland, will present “Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla” by M.I. Glinka.
“We hope the campus and community will take advantage of the opportunity to hear our students perform under the direction of our new director of choral activities,” said Steven Moore, chair of the Department of Music. “This also is unique opportunity to hear performances by the four top ensembles in the Department of Music, including the combination of vocal and instrumental performances in one event.”
