Annual Saudi Arabia Day Planned for Oct. 17

Contact: Mike Greife

WARRENSBURG, MO (Oct. 9, 2008) – UCM will celebrate Middle East culture as it hosts the ninth annual Saudi Arabia Day Friday, Oct. 17.

Paul and Colleen Nance will be Honored Guests

Honored guests for the event will be Paul and Colleen Nance, longtime friends of the university. The Nances made a gift of the Nance Middle East Collection to the university in 2003, making UCM the home of the most extensive private collection of Middle East art and artifacts in the United States. Housed in the university’s Arthur F. McClure Archives and University Museum in the James C. Kirkpatrick Library, the collection was carefully gathered by the Nances during Dr. Nance’s career of more than 30 years with ARAMCO Oil in Saudi Arabia.

Authentic Cuisine Featured

The program will begin a 3:30 p.m. in the south read and relax area on the first floor of the library, adjacent to the archives and museum. Following a welcome by Joy Stevenson, director of UCM’s International Center, UCM President Aaron Podolefsky will introduce Paul Nance, who will offer remarks. Gersham Nelson, dean of the UCM College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, will offer a response.

Refreshments, including authentic foods prepared by UCM’s Saudi Arabian students, will be provided.

An Opportunity to Enjoy International Fellowship

“UCM’s celebration of Saudi Arabia Day has become a campus tradition, and we look forward to welcoming the Nances back to the campus and community to share their experiences and insights into Middle East culture,” said John Sheets, director of the of the Arthur F. McClure Archives and University Museum and chair of the Department of History and Anthropology. “We hope the community will join us for this unique opportunity for international fellowship.”
