Tailgate Decorating Contest Part of Annual Event in Warrensburg

Contact: Jeff Murphy
WARRENSBURG, MO (Sept. 19, 2014) – Tailgate with the City may have a literal interpretation for some of those attending this free, family fun event at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 in downtown Warrensburg. For the first time since its establishment, activities outside the civic center complex, 102 S. Holden St., will include a tailgate decorating contest.

This is tailgate art,” said Marvin “Slim” Coleman, director of public works for the city of Warrensburg, who also is helping to coordinate the competition. “You can repurpose a tailgate for something like a porch swing, headboard, wall hanging or coffee table, or you can just decorate it.”

Coleman said the contest is open to anyone who is interested in participating. It includes categories for tailgates from vintage and late-model vehicles, and prizes awarded to top entries in each category. He said all tailgates must be painted. No printed wraps will be allowed.

“We want to see original work,” Coleman noted.

Individuals can pre-register their tailgates by contacting Coleman or Courtney Stephens at Warrensburg City Hall, 660-747-9131, or just show up on the day of the event. All tailgates entered in the competition must be taken to the Warrensburg Police Department, Madison and Washington streets, by 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18.

Tailgate with the City is an annual outdoor event that takes place on the same day as the University of Central Missouri’s Homecoming parade. It features food, children’s games, entertainment, vendors and more. The festivities are being coordinated by a committee that includes representatives of the City of Warrensburg, Warrensburg Main Street, Warrensburg R-VI School District, Convention and Tourism Advisory Board, and UCM. Student volunteers from Warrensburg High School will also assist with the event.

All activities are designed to give UCM students, employees and alumni, local families, and community visitors fun options in the downtown area between the conclusion of the parade and the beginning of the Mules Homecoming football game.  Anyone who has questions is urged to contact Julie Turnipseed at Warrensburg Main Street, 111 N. Holden St., at 660-429-3988.
