Africana Studies Hosts South African Scholar Richard Unite

WARRENSBURG, MO (Oct. 28, 2009) – UCM ’s Center for Africana Studies will host Richard Unite as a visiting scholar Oct. 28-29 on the UCM campus.

Unite will speak on “African Continental Initiatives: Experiences in Community Development” at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29 in Elliott Union 219. His lecture will focus on leadership, family and community development in the new South Africa. The public is invited to attend, free of charge.

Unite received a master’s degree in industrial relations and human resources from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, formerly the University of Port Elizabeth. His professional experience includes serving as a chief community liaison officer in the Department of Social Development for the Port Elizabeth Region and Human Resources Development Task Team Member during the post-apartheid transition.

Unite also will speak to classes in the university’s departments of History and Anthropology, and Sociology and Social Work during his visit.
