Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) and Your First College Year (YFCY) Surveys

Officials at the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) have developed several national benchmark assessments which are used at colleges and universities throughout the United States. UCM participates in two of those surveys-- CIRP, which is commonly known as The Freshman Survey (or TFS) and Your First College Year (YFCY). UCM participates in these assessments every other fall, on odd years.

HERI provides a PDF version of the CIRP survey instrument as well as the YFCY survey instrument.  Additional information about CIRP and YFCY may be obtained by visiting the HERI website.

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) Survey

Officials at the Center for Post-secondary Research at Indiana University developed a widely-known national benchmark assessment called NSSE. Colleges and universities use this assessment tool to determine how students are engaging inside and outside the classroom. Students are asked about hours spent doing a variety of activities, plans to take part in certain courses, projects and activities, etc. UCM participates in this assessment during every other spring, on even years.
