Position Summary:
A front desk employee for the Learning Commons is a qualified UCM student who provides
general administrative support for all students. Front desk employees normally work
4 to 18 hours per week in the Learning Commons.
Essential Tasks:
- Welcome students to the center and ensure login protocols are followed
- Schedule appointments
- Ensure students are connected with the appropriate Learning Commons staff
- Demonstrate excellent customer service skills
- Answer phones and check voicemail
- Monitor and respond to the Learning Commons email
- Data entry
Perform clerical duties as assigned
Additional Duties:
- Attend all mandatory Learning Commons training sessions
- Practice all policies and procedures listed in the Student Employee Handbook
- Meet periodically with coordinator to discuss performance and plan
- Be committed to working for the entire semester of employment
- Refer all problems and concerns, particularly student issues that are non-academic,
to the Tutoring Coordinator
- Assist with university wide workshops and presentations
- Assist with additional needs within the Learning Commons
- Update Learning Commons social media as directed
Qualifications/Special Skills Required:
- Must be currently enrolled in at least 6 undergraduate or 4 graduate credits.
- Must have attained an overall 2.0 CUM GPA or better
- Customer service experience is preferred, but not a requirement
- Able to use computer workstation
- Maintain student records confidentiality
Position Summary:
A study plan peer tutor for the Learning Commons is a qualified undergraduate or graduate
student who provides general academic support for all students. Study plan tutors
will meet with students one-on-one to generate individualized Study Plans. Study plan
tutors will host and promote weekly Study Plan workshops. Study Skills tutors normally
work 4 to 18 hours per week in the Learning Commons.
Essential Tasks:
- Assist students with creating academic plan of success specific to courses
- Guide students through syllabus review while reviewing the important components and
purpose
- Provide general study skills assistance
- Create Study Calendars
- Present the fundamental methods and study techniques
- Log all tutoring appointment summaries in SSC
- Host workshops and presentations
- Update Learning Commons Social Media as directed

member. Possess the ability to work with students in a one-on-one setting as well
as in small groups.

Position Summary
Writing Center peer tutors provide individualized writing instruction to students
at all stages of the writing process. Peer tutors review student’s writing, provide
feedback, and help students develop a plan for revision. In addition to face-to-face
tutoring in the Learning Commons, peer tutors provide written feedback on papers submitted
through the Online Writing Lab (OWL). Tutors may also give short presentations, assist
with writing workshop, and develop resources for student writers. Tutors normally
work 5-15 hours per week.
Essential Tasks
- Provide writing instruction and feedback to student writers
- Support, encourage, and mentor student writers
- Practice active listening and questioning strategies
- Create opportunities for students to explore ideas, write, revise, edit, and evaluate
their writing
- Monitor and respond to submissions to the online writing lab (OWL)
- Log all tutoring appointment summaries in SSC
- Attend trainings and staff meetings

Position Summary
A supplemental instruction (SI) leader is a qualified undergraduate student who provides
academic support and hosts two 1-hour study sessions per week in the Learning Commons.
In the study-sessions, the SI leader facilitates discussion and small-group activities
where students review content from the supported class. SI leaders work between 8-10 hours per week.
Essential Tasks
- Conduct 2 SI study groups per week throughout the semester
- Develop learning activities and materials for SI study groups
- Creative a positive, interactive learning environment
- Attend class meetings for the assigned course
Promote SI sessions during class and make relevant announcements
- Role model effective behavior of successful students
- Log all tutoring appointment summaries in SSC
