MoretoMath: Grades 1st - 4th


Description
:

Teachers will experience concrete activities to develop math concepts thus making them understandable to all students. Scenarios are presented as word problems in which students read, write and represent numbers. MoreToMath is focused on exposing students to mathematical practices to build understanding, not just on rote procedures.

 

Agenda

• Introductions and short history of LEGO Group

• Hands-on activities for operations & algebraic thinking

    • One and two-step word problems involving additions & subtraction

• Hands-on activities for number & operations in base ten

    • Understanding place value up to 4-digit numbers

• Hands-on activities for measurement & data

    • Generate, organize, represent and interpret measurement data

• Hands-on activities for geometry

    • Constructing models to represent geometric shapes and analyzing their attributes

• Teachers be exposed to MathBuilder, a computer based demonstration tool, to show and to see student’s reasoning and problem solving.

• Materials management & storage

• Support & follow up options

 

Simple Machines: Grades 1st - 4th

Description:
Experience firsthand how to develop students’ understanding of science, engineering, and mathematics concepts when using the LEGO Education Simple Machines Set. This workshop will cover physical science principles, basic activities, and curriculum connections.

• Introductions and short history of LEGO Group

• Hands-on principle investigation for gears, levers, wheels & axles, or pulleys

    • Introduction of relevant vocabulary and concepts while constructing

• Hands-on main model activity for gears, levers, wheels & axles, or pulleys

    • Predict outcome, investigate by building model, & document findings

• Hands-on problem-solving activity for gears, levers, wheels & axles, or pulleys

    • Apply knowledge to new situation by creating model

• Materials management & storage

• Support & follow up options
