Putting Safety First
The third component of MEM's gift will fund an annual undergraduate scholarship. The MEM Outstanding Student Scholarship is for a full-time junior or senior undergraduate who is in good academic standing at UCM, pursuing a major in occupational safety and health or safety management. To be considered, the student must have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.0, be a legal Missouri resident, and have demonstrated campus and community involvement. The scholarship will cover tuition, fees and books for two semesters.

All of this seems to please Smith as he talks about the national need for safety professionals. He smiles at the audience as he concludes his remarks, "It could be that some of our efforts here are going to train people for our competitors, but that's okay. We want other people to join us in this mission to create healthy and injury-free workplaces. It is very important. I call it the missionary zeal."
