Initial Certification
Initial certification may be earned in a variety of ways with varying benefits and drawbacks. Students who do not have certification but who have a bachelor's degree may seek school library media certification through alternative certification.

Certification Course Work
As outlined by the DESE document, (Certification requirements for Library Media), the program of study for initial certification includes professional education and subject area course work.
Completion of Master of Science or Education Specialist Degree
Master of Science in Library Science and Information Services: Once candidates have completed the coursework required for certification, they are only a few semester hours short of a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science. The additional courses required for the master's degree are as follows:

Education Specialist in Human Services, Learning Resources: For those candidates who have a master's degree in education, library science, or closely related field, the certification courses listed above form the core of their program. The additional courses required for the Education Specialist degree are as follows:
