Implementation Timeline

August 2011 to May 2012:  Tobacco Policy Committee conducted research

April 2012:  SGA passed a 100% Smoke-free Resolution

June 2012:  Tobacco Policy Committee recommended 100% tobacco-free policy

August 2012-September 2012: UCM Strategic Leadership Team reviewed recommendations

October 2012: UCM Board of Governors approved policy revision

October 2012 to August 2013: initial communications

  • Developed signage and communication materials
  • Developed training materials to help the campus community learn how to educate their peers about the tobacco free policy
  • Advertised cessation resources
  • Recruited Tobacco Free Ambassadors for new student organization

August 2013 to December 2013: education and training

  • Educated campus about the new policy
  • Implemented training to help the campus community educate peers about the new tobacco free policy
  • Offered assistance to individuals who use tobacco for either relocating their tobacco use or changing their tobacco use behaviors in preparation for the Januarys 2014 policy change

January 2014 and following:

  • Policy became effective January 1, 2014
  • Evaluated impact of new policy on campus waste and health
  • Continue to educate campus about tobacco-free policy
  • Continue to offer tobacco cessation resources
