Actuarial Science Program

Interviewing with Amy Billups 2013 Actuarial Science Graduate

Unique Program

The Actuarial Science program in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at University of Central Missouri is the only such program in the Missouri public university system. It offers a curriculum that provides students with a broad and comprehensive knowledge in mathematics, statistics, economics, finance, and the actuarial modeling. The curriculum also prepares students for a series of actuarial exams sponsored by SOA and CAS and leads to a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in actuarial science and statistics. The major required courses in Applied Statistics, Economics, and Finance are all approved by SOA/CAS for VEE credits in the 2005 Exam System.

The primary faculty member of the actuarial program is an SOA certified actuary and has a strong record in actuarial education, research, and insurance industry experiences. Our faculty members are dedicated and conscientious with more than 10 years teaching experiences. They work with students in small groups to help them to succeed in their majors.

The actuarial science program at UCM has a very supportive alumni and their employers’ network in Kansas City area. The actuarial student club has had numerous opportunities for guest speakers at their monthly meetings as well as for field trips visiting area insurance companies. In addition, the program has an advisory committee consisting of former students, their employers, and current students to provide valuable inputs to the program curriculum committee.

Program Recognition

SOA UCM Actuarial Science program is recognized by the Society of Actuaries and listed as an Undergraduate-Advanced program on the SOA website. UCM is one of approximately 60 universities in the United States to be in this top classification.
