2013 IMPACT Freshmen Leadership Retreat

The IMPACT Freshmen Leadership Retreat is a three day retreat for first year incoming students. The retreat
provides students with an opportunity to meet incoming students, 33 upper class students, faculty and
staff. During the retreat students will participate in team building activities, information sessions, special
presentations, ice breakers, bonfire and smores and become acclimated to UCM.

Goals:

  • To provide information about how students can get involved at UCM
  • To explain services and resources available to students
  • To get students thinking about how to develop their leadership skills
  • To provide opportunities for the students to learn more about themselves and their peers
  • To acclimate students to UCM
  • To provide networking opportunities for students

Facilitator Goals

  • Help ease the transition from high school to college for incoming students
  • Build friendships with new students
  • Provide information about how to get involved on campus and the services and resources available
  • Help students learn more about themselves and others by debriefing activities and engaging in
    discussions
 

Facilitator Expectations

  • No tobacco or alcohol at the retreat
  • Be punctual to IMPACT meetings and events
  • Check email on a regular basis and reply when necessary
  • Display a high level of energy and enthusiasm towards UCM at all times
  • Be friendly to students and open to helping them
  • Portray UCM in a positive light
  • Encourage students to try and experience new things
  • Help at a New Student Orientation if possible
  • Be a positive role model and stick to appropriate topics

Facilitator Duties

  • Lead small group discussions after presentations
  • Conduct small group presentations on different topics
  • Lead ice breakers and team builders
  • Facilitate the registration process
  • Answer questions students may have
  • Follow-up with students through Facebook and email
  • Include students in all of the activities and ensure students are participating
  • Provide information about involvement opportunities, student housing, services and resources

***All of the meetings are on Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. in Union 217

Summer Orientation Dates

Facilitators are asked to help at an orientation date if possible. Facilitators will help during “Mule Mall” for
approximately 45 minutes. Summer orientations are used to advertise the retreat to prospective students.
Students like to hear from and interact with current students.
