Musical Theatre Audition Information

BFA Musical Theatre Audition Requirements


Saturday February 7, 2015 – 12:00-5:00 pm – Highlander Theatre UCM Campus

Auditions for the BFA in Musical Theatre, the BFA in Performance, and the BFA in Design and Technology will all be held on this date.

To register for any of the BFA auditions students should notify the Department of Theatre and Dance that they plan to attend. They may contact Colette Tilden at tilden@ucmo.edu or call 660-543-4020.

The BFA in Musical Theatre Audition Requirements

-An upbeat-tempo musical comedy number - 16 bars
-A musical ballad - 16 bars
-Both songs should be memorized and accompanied by sheet music
-An accompanist will be provided
-Prepare two 1-2 minute memorized monologues from contemporary theatre material
-Dance – You will be asked to learn a dance combination and present it with the group

What to Bring:
-Bring a Resume detailing your training and production experience
-If you have tap dancing experience, please bring your tap shoes
-For your songs and monologue you should wear appropriate attire
-For the dance audition you will have the opportunity to change into dance attire. Please wear jazz or character shoes

Students: In addition to your audition you will have an interview with the Musical Theatre Faculty. You will have the opportunity to share your interest and learn more about the degree.

The BFA Performance Audition Requirements

-Prepare 2 memorized contrasting monologues from any published plays. You can also show contrast by doing a piece from classic theatrical literature. Please keep the total time of both monologues to 3 minutes.

What to Bring:
-Bring a current 8X10 color picture with attached theatre resume.
-Items on resume should include title of production, role and place of production.
-Other items to include: technical or related experience, special skills, awards or honors.

Students: In addition to your audition you will have an interview with the Performance Faculty about your university and future goals. You will have the opportunity to share your interest and learn more about the degree.

The BFA Design and Technology Audition Requirements

-Students should prepare and present a resume reflecting their theatrical work experience. A format for structuring their resume may be found at http://sightlines.usitt.org/archive/v46/n10/stories/ResumeAfterBig.JPG.
-Students should bring three copies of their resume to their interview.
-Students should prepare and present a portfolio that includes visual examples of their work.
-The portfolio may be in any format that is convenient (link to a website, Power Point Presentation, drawing, sketches, photos, etc.) The portfolio must be neat and well organized. Portfolios should present 10-20 examples of their best work. The following are some examples that may be included in the student’s portfolio based on their area of interest. Represented work need not be theatrical in nature.

  • Costume Design/Stitcher: drawings, paintings, collages, pictures of garments that you have made, costume renderings with swatches.
  • Lighting Design/Electrician: Drawings, painting, photos of previous work, drafting plots, cue sheets.
  • Scene Design: Drawings, paintings, photos of realized and unrealized work (renderings), draftings, elevations, photos of models.
  • Stage Management: Prompt scripts, cue sheets, ground plans, rehearsal reports, performance reports, programs.
  • Technical Direction/Stage Carpentry: Draftings, photographs of construction process, photographs of finished scenery, budget paperwork, schedules.

-Students should compose a 250 word statement outlining their academic goals as well as their career goals in the area of theatrical design and/or technology.

-Students: In addition to your portfolio presentation you will have an interview with the Design and Technology Faculty about your university and future goals. You will have the opportunity to share your interest and learn more about the degree.
