Joined UCM Faculty in 2000.
Dr. Check teaches music theory and aural training. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. from Yale. His dissertation explored the uses of compound melody in jazz improvisations.
His articles and reviews have appeared in Studies in Music from the University of Western Ontario, NOTES, the Saxophone Symposium, The Instrumentalist, and the ITEA Journal. He has read papers at the annual meetings of MACRO, the Oklahoma Music Theory Roundtable, the Missouri Philological Association, and the American Musical Instrument Society. In addition, he has presented a number of talks at the National Music Museum at the University of South Dakota. An active performer on low brass and piano, he is interested mainly in theory pedagogy, musical form, and counterpoint.
