Themed Learning Communities (TLCs) are designed especially for first-year students starting at UCM in the fall. Each TLC consists of two General Education courses that address a common theme from different disciplinary perspectives. Students work closely with each other to complete at least one integrated assignment, typically an engaging, hands-on project. Faculty members also work closely with each other to make sure the connections are clear.
Finding a group of friends helps any new student feel more at home. TLCs foster that feeling because you take two courses with the same group of students. Together, you practice integrative learning, or the ability to make connections among different academic subjects. It’s a great way to get more out of courses you would complete anyway.
Admitted freshmen can check “Yes” to TLCs when you fill out your orientation registration. Your academic advisor will make every effort to enroll you in the TLC that matches your interest and degree program. Space is limited, however, so sign up early for the best chance of getting the TLC you want.
