Occupational Education, BS

Build on Your Experience

You will use the knowledge and skills obtained in the BS in Occupational Education to teach and train people in a variety of educational and industrial settings. This 2+2 program will expand your career and technical competencies to excel in workplace tasks, including problem solving and critical thinking. Your specific area of teaching expertise will be determined by your previous career, industry, and education experience.

Flexible Scheduling

The majority of your courses in the BS in Occupational Education are delivered using non-traditional formats. This means your courses will meet online or once a month during the evening to work around your schedule. Some of our classes even meet in regional locations across Missouri for timely, convenient delivery. By working with your local colleges and universities, this degree program can be taken completely online.

Student Learning Outcomes

You will use the knowledge and skills obtained in the program to:

  • Meet the Missouri Teacher Standards (MTS) at the introductory level or above.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of instructional materials and their development.
  • Produce and implement authentic student assessments.
  • Disaggregate assessment data for improved student learning and performance in the 3 primary domains of learning; cognitive, psychomotor, and affective.

Professional Organizations

You will be encouraged to join the Missouri Association for Career and Technical Education (MoACTE), Missouri's professional organization for career and technical educators. Many students also carry certification through various professional organizations within their specialty areas. Some of these areas include the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), American Welding Society (AWS), and similar organizations.

Certification and Employment Opportunities

With a BS in Occupational Education, you will be able to apply for Career Education Teacher Certification through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) or your own state’s Department of Education. Certification will allow you to teach in comprehensive high schools with career education programs in your specialty area, as well as career centers, community colleges, private proprietary schools, adult evening schools, public post-secondary programs, industry apprenticeship programs, and Federal Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) programs.
