Social Studies for BSE, Minor

Instill Citizenship Education

Adding the Minor in Social Studies to your Bachelor of Science in Education degree will expand your teaching expertise and give you access to greater career opportunities. Throughout the program, you will learn social studies literacy and assessment instruction. You will experience authentic classroom instruction through observations, microteaching, and internships. Your hands-on learning experiences through professional research and presentation opportunities will allow you to be competitive in the job market. This minor can serve as a gateway to additional certification and employment opportunities.


Lasting Relationships

The director of the social studies program will assist you in your program, from freshman semester all the way through graduation. This will allow you to be more connected to the program and build relationships within the social studies community that will carry you beyond graduation and into your career.

Student Learning Outcomes

You will use the knowledge and skills obtained in the Social Studies program to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the content areas required for certification in the social studies.
  • Demonstrate the capacity to provide instruction in the disciplinary fields of the social studies.
  • Meet Missouri Standards for Teacher Educators.
  • Pass the Missouri Content Assessment subject area exam at the level set by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Use technology, research skills, problem solving, communication and critical thinking within the teaching profession.
