9-11 Tragedy to be Remembered Through Special UCM Observance

Contact: Jeff Murphy
WARRENSBURG, MO (Aug. 31, 2012) –  A remembrance ceremony honoring those who lost their lives in the 9-11 tragedy is planned for noon Tuesday, Sept. 11 at the University of Central Missouri quadrangle. The event is open to everyone, and is being coordinated by the Office of Military and Veteran Services and a faculty member from the safety science program in the School of Environmental, Physical and Applied Sciences.

The ceremony will include a welcome from UCM President Charles Ambrose and keynote remarks from Larry Kay, executive director of the Missouri Veterans Commission. He is also the father of UCM freshman music major, Anna Kay, who will sing the National Anthem.

Other participants include the university’s Army ROTC Color Guard, faculty and students from the UCM Department of Music, members of the Collegiate Firefighters Association, as well as local first responders. This will include firefighting units, law enforcement and ambulance service personnel from Warrensburg, Johnson County, and Whiteman Air Force Base.

Additional ceremonies are planned around the nation on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks, which occurred Sept. 11, 2001, and involved the loss of lives and collapse of the World Trade Center in New York City, and fatal airplane crashes that occurred at the U.S. Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. In addition to thousands of civilians who were killed, some 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 police officers, and 37 Port Authority police officers died during these terrorist acts.

Individuals who want to know more about the 9-11 remembrance ceremony should contact Delilah Nichols, coordinator of Military and Veteran Services, at 660-543-8776, or Scott Ammon, assistant professor of safety science, at 660-543-4017.
