WARRENSBURG, MO (Aug. 17, 2010) - The University of Central Missouri’s Gallery of Art and Design unveils its 2010-2011 season with exhibitions focusing on the professional practice of faculty in the UCM Department of Art and Design, along with the human fascination with the defiance of gravity.

Opening Aug. 26, the annual Department of Art and Design Faculty Exhibition will feature a wealth of artistic media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and textiles, while showcasing the professional practices of UCM’s art faculty outside of their university duties. In addition to current faculty, several emeriti faculty also will have work on exhibit. The annual Faculty Exhibition is supported by community partner, Murdock Banner Financial Group.

Also opening Aug. 26, “Flight: The Defiance of Gravity,” features an installation work by artist Melanie Walker and kites from the Kansas City Kite Club. Walker, a Colorado-based artist, is the co-creator in Airworks Studio and has worked collaboratively in aerial sculpture since 1996. The mission of the Kansas City Kite Club is to educate the public about the art, technique, science, technology, and history of kite flying. Both exhibitions will run through Sept. 17, 2010.

Meagan Dion, a junior art history major in the Department of Art and Design, begins her tenure as Gallery 115 student assistant curator with the planning and preparation for the current exhibition season. A public reception in honor of the opening of the exhibitions is planned for 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26. The public is invited to attend and meet Dion and the artists and discuss their works.

The UCM Gallery of Art and Design, located at 217 E. Clark St., is open to the public at no charge. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays, noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays, or by appointment. Group tours also may be arranged.
