Gallery of Art and Design Hosts Exhibition of Works by Polony-Mountain

WARRENSBURG, MO (Oct. 2, 2013) – The Gallery of Art and Design at the University of Central Missouri will host the exhibition “Every Fiber of Her Being” Sept. 30 through Oct. 25 in the main gallery.

The exhibition features the marble mosaics, stained glass, tapestries, stone sculptures and high-relief copper panels of Kansas City artist Gabriella Polony-Mountain. Born in 1918 in Sasvar, Hungary, Polony Mountain studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and in Rome before arriving in America in 1951.

Polony-Mountain becme a respected exhibition artist in Kansas City while receiving commissions for regional architects and becoming a sought-after commodity in the commercial market. Many examples of her work can be found in the area, including repousse and stained-glass installations on the in Houts-Hosey Hall and the Utt Building on the UCM campus, stained-glass windows in the chapel at Whiteman Air Force Base and mosaics for the baptistery of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Mission Hills, Kan.

She received the Huntington-Hartford Fellowship in 1954 and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Fellowship in 1955. In 1958, she received the American Institute of Architecture Craftsmanship Award in Kansas City for her repoussé doors at the Taliaferro residence in St. Joseph, and an "Art in Architecture" award for her repoussé fireplace mantle in the home of architect Peter Keleti in Kansas City.

The public is invited to meet the Polony-Mountain at an opening reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in the gallery at 217 E. Clark.

The UCM Gallery of Art and Design is open to the public, free of charge, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Groups are welcome.
