WARRENSBURG - 1/26/2007- UCM's Performing Arts Series brings the world-famous Harlem Gospel Choir to campus Friday, Feb. 9, to share the traditions and history of American gospel music. The 12-member choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Hendricks Hall.
Free Gospel Music Workshop Planned
The choir also will conduct a public workshop at 3 p.m. in Hendricks Hall. The public is invited to attend the free workshop and learn about the history and development of gospel music in America while learning a gospel song in three-part harmony.
Chamber of Commerce to Host Reception
The Greater Warrensburg Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center, in conjunction with UCM’s Office of Community Engagement and Department of Art, will host a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the UCM Art Center Gallery, 217 E. Clark.
The reception will coincide with the opening of exhibitions of authentic African art collected by Patrick Irue and paintings by Robert Colescott. It also will kick off the university’s celebration of Black History Month and highlight the Office of Community Engagement’s annual presentation of “Beyond Words.”

Sharing the Celebration of Gospel Music
Allen Bailey formed the 12-member choir in 1986 after attending a celebration honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. at Harlem’s famed Cotton Club. Bringing together the finest black musicians from black churches in Harlem, the choir travels the globe, sharing its joy of faith through its music and raising funds for children’s charities.
Performances Include Guest Artists
The Harlem Gospel Choir was granted a private audience in 2003 with His Holiness Pope John Paul II. Over the years, renowned performers such as Lyle Love, Dianna Ross, Harry Belafonte, Brooks and Dunn, Ashford and Simpson, Jimmy Cliff, Bono and the Chieftains have joined the choir in musical celebration.
