Heart Walk Committee Announces 2015 Event Date, Seeks Participants, Support

Contact: Jeff Murphy
WARRENSBURG, MO (Feb. 22, 2015) – At the same time people across the nation are observing American Heart Month in February, a group of Johnson County residents are busy making plans to raise money in the fight against cardiovascular disease. Working directly with the American Heart Association, the committee has set Saturday, Oct. 3 as the date for the 2015 Johnson County Heart Walk. The event will take place on the University of Central Missouri campus for the third consecutive year.

To help reach the $81,000 goal, the committee is looking for individuals who are willing to serve as team captains and participate as walkers. Committee members also are interested in working with representatives of local organizations, businesses, and industries who want to help support the Heart Walk through sponsorship or company participation.

Leadership in the local committee includes Amanda Avent, a Warrensburg resident and UCM graduate who serves as corporate events director for the American Heart Association, and Susan Stiles, RN, BSN, MHA, MBA, Western Missouri Medical Center President/CEO, who is chairing the local Heart Walk for the second consecutive year.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of the Heart Walk as we strive to continually promote heart-healthy lifestyles and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in Johnson County,” Stiles said. “Early detection and prevention is key in fighting heart disease, which is why we recommend cardiac calcium-score scans to assess the risk for heart disease. This is a non-invasive CT scan of the heart, which checks for the buildup of calcium in plaque on the walls of the arteries of the heart. This exam is available without a physician order for only $50 in our Diagnostic Imaging Department.”

With activities situated near the UCM Student Recreation and Wellness Center, the university provides a park-like setting for the Heart Walk. It is a place where families, friends and working colleagues can enjoy fun AHA activities and information by visiting various tents sponsored by local businesses and groups.

Avent said the Heart Walk Committee hopes to increase participation in this year’s event. In 2014, there were 89 team captains and 567 walkers who helped generate more than $50,500 to support education and research by the American Heart Association.

The American Heart Association is the largest voluntary health organization dedicated to defeating heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. Its mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke — the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers, Avent noted.
