WARRENSBURG, MO (Sept. 17, 2014) - The University of Central Missouri Department of English and Philosophy and Department of Music will host “Lyrically Speaking: Celebrating the Poems and Songs of Francis Jammes,” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, in the Jackson Performance Corner of the James C. The free event is a celebration of the release of the fifth volume of the Unsung Masters Series, “Francis Jammes: On the Life and Work of a Modern Master,” published by the Pleiades Press at UCM.

Jammes produced poems, plays, and novels in the mountain villages of the remote French Basque country in the early 20th century. His poems became a source of inspiration to musicians as well, and his poems took on a second life in song.

Tenor Jacob Sentgeorge, accompanied by Mia Hynes on piano, will perform settings of Jammes’ poems, followed by a discussion of Jammes’ works by translators and scholars John Gallaher, Benjamin Johnson, Kathryn Nuernberger and Bruce Whiteman.

Copies of the book will be available following the presentation, with Nuernberger and Whiteman, editors of the book, available for signing.

The presentation is part of the Pleiades Visiting Writers Series in cooperation with the Office of the Performing Arts at UCM.
