WARRENSBURG, MO (Aug. 15, 2013) – Kathleen Leicht, Ph.D., has been named general education coordinator for the University of Central Missouri. Deborah Curtis, provost and chief learning officer, announced the appointment of Leicht to the half-time faculty position, effectively immediately.

“We are excited about the establishment of this position at UCM,” Curtis said. “The general education curriculum and accompanying experiences are central to a UCM student's development as a life-long learner. With the appointment of Dr. Leicht to this role, we will now enjoy the leadership of a scholar who will infuse energy and passion into our goal to make the general education program at UCM one that is future-focused, engaging, and has as a primary objective the enhancement of student achievement and success.”

Curtis added that as UCM rolls out the Learning to a Greater Degree Contract, the general education coordinator will orchestrate partnerships across the university that concentrate efforts to implement a distinctive general education program paired with a lively first-year experience for incoming students.

Leicht, a professor of English in the Department of English and Philosophy, chairs the Faculty and Staff General Education Committee that was established by the Office of the Provost and Chief Learning Officer to evaluate the university’s general education program and ensure the maximum effectiveness of the general education curriculum in the successes of UCM students.

Leicht joined the UCM faculty in 1992 as an assistant professor and has risen through the ranks to be named professor in 2011. She served as chair of the Department of English and Philosophy from 2001 to 2005, and she currently serves as director of first-year composition. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and government from Weslyan University, and Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees in English from the University of Rochester.

“Dr. Leicht brings the complete set of intellectual and professional qualities to this work that we were searching for in our new general education coordinator,” Curtis said. “We are grateful she has accepted this position.”
