Lifelong Learning Program Addresses Myths, Realities of Health and Wellness

WARRENSBURG, MO (May 27, 2011) -- The free Lifelong Learning series, “Health and Wellness: Myths and Realities,” will be offered at the Warrensburg Senior Center, 445 E. Gay St., June 16, 23 and 30. The series is designed to assist retired persons, or those nearing retirement, in assessing their personal health and wellness needs. It may also benefit those assisting family members with their health needs.

Lifelong Learning is an educational program for older adults provided for the community by the University of Central Missouri. This series is sponsored by Care Connection for Aging Services, Johnson County Community Health Services, UCM Office of Campus Activities, Warrensburg Senior Center, and Western Missouri Medical Center.

The three parts are progressive. The first part begins with an overview of health issues. The second deals with more specific details, and the last provides information about services available through two agencies, Care Connection for Aging Services and Johnson County Community Health Services. All topics are presented in an open, informal format and discussions are led by Warrensburg residents, UCM alumni, emeriti and faculty members.  Each session will be limited to approximately one hour. Topics and presenters will be as follows:

  • Part I: Physical and Mental Health Concerns 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 16

    Brian Parsells, D.O., psychiatrist, Pathways Healthcare
  • Part II: Exercise, Diet, and Personal Health Care 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 23
    Steve Burns, Ph.D., associate professor of kinesiology, UCM
    Mike Carter, Ph.D., professor emeritus of health education, UCM
    Susie Miller, R.D., L.D., C.D.E., clinical dietitian, WMMC
  • Part III: Free Health Services in the Community 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 30
    Rona McNally, project manager, Care Connections for Aging Services
    Debbie Haller, R.N., director, Johnson County Community Health Services
    Holli Burge, R.N., public health educator, Johnson County Community Health Services
