WARRENSBURG, MO (May 28, 2015) – U. S. Senator Claire McCaskill welcomed business owners interested in contracting with the U.S. government to the annual Procurement Conference Thursday, May 28, at the University of Central Missouri.

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, right, spoke during the opening session of the annual Procurement Conference at UCM May 28. Joining her on the dais were, left to right, Jason Porch, statewide director of the Missouri Procurement Technical Assistance Centers; Janet Wilson, CFO of The Wilson Group, Inc., and Harry Hallock, deputy assistant secretary of the Army.

The conference is hosted by McCaskill, the Missouri Procurement Technical Assistance Centers and the Missouri Small Business and Technology Development Center at UCM. This was the 26th year for the event, which was initiated by the late U.S. Congressman Ike Skelton.

Prior to the four schedule panel sessions, McCaskill told those gathered that the goal of the conference was “to expose you to a range of information for new or seasoned business owners about how to successfully contract with the government.” She added that the contributions of small businesses are essential to government efficiency and effectiveness.

“The federal government operates under a constrained budget,” she said. “It is important to provide opportunities for the growth of small business while operating in a competitive environment. The United States has been in military conflict for over a decade now, and we have learned that we have to be smarter about how we use the taxpayers’ money. I’ve been tough on the Department of Defense, but it’s the legitimate contractors who pay the price when unethical contractors are out there.”

Keynote speaker for the conference was Vice Admiral William Hilarides, commander of Naval Sea Systems Command. Luncheon speaker was Harry Hallock, deputy assistant secretary of the Army. Also speaking during the opening session was Janet Wilson, chief financial officer of The Wilson Group, Inc.., who spoke on successfully contracting with the government.
