UCM Foundation Launches Online Scholarship Application for Students

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Dec. 9, 2013)-Just in time for the holiday break, a period when students typically apply for scholarships, the University of Central Missouri Foundation has partnered with Student Financial Services and the Office of Technology to launch MoCents, an online program that provides incoming and current students an easier way to discover and apply for donor-funded scholarships.

Created by Academic Works, the streamlined application process begins by students creating a personal account and individual profile. The system automatically matches students with all available scholarship funding based on their major/minor, grade point average, financial need and student activities.

“Thanks to the continued generosity of our donors, the Foundation manages nearly 450 scholarships. We consider it one of our greatest responsibilities to make sure their gifts are invested wisely and have maximum impact on our students,” said Jason Drummond, vice president for Alumni Relations and Development and executive director of the Foundation. “This technology—to make sure our students are aware of all the available financial assistance that donors have made available to help them succeed—is one more step in our journey to create efficient use of the investments our donors have made in UCM.”

To use the system at, current students must use their UCM student email address and password, 700 number and unofficial transcript. Prospective students must be officially admitted and if they do not yet have a UCM assigned email should use the one they provided on their admission application. “For many years, we wanted to move away from a paper-based system to one that was more student friendly and convenient. This new system is an incredible improvement, and it supports our campus commitment to be green,” said Angela Karlin, director of Student Financial Assistance.

Last year, the UCM Foundation awarded more than $1 million in direct scholarship support to students and is running ahead of that pace by 17 percent this year, according to Drummond.

“UCM alumni and friends are generous in wanting to help our students succeed in college without incurring substantial debt. Scholarships are the single largest area their gifts support,” he added.

Students have until March 1 to apply for the scholarships but many do so over the holidays and during the winter semester break. If they encounter any issues trying to use the new online system, they are encouraged to email
